Nearly 1,000 workers of People’ Welfare Front (PWF) today staged a four-hour dharna in the city, condemning police action against students and general public, who were seeking permanent solution to the Jallikkattu in a peaceful manner in Chennai and here.

The dharna, held under the leadership of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalavan, condemned the way the police reacted to the protest with lathicharge, teargas and torching some vehicles.

Moreover, to hide their alleged involvement in the violence activities, police was wrongly making propaganda of the infiltration of anti-socials in the protest, they alleged.

They urged the Government to take stringent action against those police personnel allegedly involved in the violence, release of innocent youths who were arrested and not to register false cases against public to hide the police excesses.

The senior leaders, including CPI-M Central Committee member U. Vasuki, former CPI-M MP, P.R. Natarajan, also condemned the lathicharge on the functionaries of Left Parties, SFI and DYFI activities in the city.

They also wanted to take action against City Police commissioner A. Amalraj for allegedly speaking ill about SFI, DYFI and a few other registered organisations at a press meet, to justify the lathicharge and eviction.

Earlier, Thirumavalavan said that the PWF will file a case, if the Government failed to take action against the erring police officials.

Tamil Nadu CPI treasurer, M. Arumugham, CPI-M District Secretary V. Ramamurthy, AIDWA District Secretary A Radhika, CITU District President C. Padmanabhan were among those participated.
