Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK) on Friday urged the Election Commission to spell out its strategy to prevent cash distribution to the voters during the by poll for RK Nagar Assembly constituency in Chennai on December 21.
“Since earlier by election was deferred following cash distribution, the Commission should take concrete steps to prevent recurrence of such malpractices, KMDK General Secretary,” E.R. Eswaran said.
“As there is no guarantee that money will not flow in the constituency, the authorities should ensure a free and fair polls and should spell out the strategy to prevent cash distribution so that the people will believe in the commission. And a large section of the voters still believe that money will play a major role in this election,” Eswaran said in a release, adding that it was the duty of the Commission to instill confidence that it will be a free and fair election.
He claimed that the money flowed like water in Thanjavur and Aruvakurichi constituencies in the State where polls were cancelled in 2016 general elections due to the complaints of cash distribution, as authorities failed to monitor then.
“In view of such incidents, it is the responsibility of the Commission to spell out the strategy to prevent ‘bribing of voters’ to instill confidence among them,” Eswaran said.
