It was a case of honour killing in the year 2002 in Covai when a Muslim man was slayed for having converted two Hindu girls to Islam and got them married.

The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the life sentences given to Kamal and Vishwanathan who stabbed Sultan to death for having got the girls converted to Islam and getting them married to two other men of his religion. The bench consisting of Judges U. U. Lalith and Kalifullah confirmed the life sentences on Tuesday.

The convicts had then threatened to kill Sultan if he continued such conversions. But a month later, Sultan again converted another Hindu girl to Islam and married her as well. Enraged over his act, Kamal and his friend stabbed Sultan to death after he stepped out of a snooker club.

The Madras High Court had already confirmed the life sentences issued by the trial court. The trial court, in 2003, convicted the duo under Sec 302 and sentenced them to life in prison.
