Shops down shutters seeking release of arrested devotees of Karamadai Ranganathar temple

Coimbatore : Tension prevailed on Saturday in Karamadai, some 30 kms from here, following the arrest of a few members of various Hindu outfits and devotees, who were protesting against the reported irregularities in a famous temple, leading to bandh in the area.

Members of a few Hindu outfits and devotees staged demonstration in front of Ranganathaswami temple, alleging irregularities by H R and CE department, under which the temple is functioning, police said.

As the police arrested the agitators, the shops and commercial establishment in the town downed their shutters and sought their immediate release, leading to tense moments, they said.

The agitators were demanding the transfer of a senior official and a clerk in the department.

The arrested persons, kept in a marriage hall, are likely to be released late in the evening, police said.
