Coimbatore: Six persons, who were arrested for tapping and selling toddy to the villagers on the outskirts of Coimbatore, went on a fast in the Central Jail, where they have been lodged.
According to the police, the persons, all members of a farmers’ association fighting for lifting the ban on toddy, led by Shanmughasundaram, were caught consuming and distributing toddy to the villagers yesterday morning, near Sulur. The police arrested them for selling the banned product.
After producing them in the court, all the six were lodged in the prison.
Protesting against their arrest, all six of them refused to take food since yesterday afternoon, resulting in health problems. Considering their condition, all the six were taken and admitted to the Government Hospital, and are undergoing treatment in the prisoners’ ward.
