Superintendent of Police J. Mahesh on Wednesday ordered the suspension of head constable Cheran, who was caught by the sleuths of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) two days ago while taking a bribe of Rs. 5,000.

Madukkur police arrested Vijayakumar (52), resident of Vadakku Madukkur, on a petty case on March 11. Though he was let off on bail, police did not return the mobile phone seized from him during enquiry.

Vijayakumar’s brother Singaravadivelan went to the police station to get back the phone. The head constable, Cheran, reportedly demanded Rs.5000 as bribe for returning the phone. He also instructed Singaravadivelan to hand over the money to him at Government Higher Secondary School, where he was on bandobust duty.

Singaravadivelan lodged a complaint with the DVAC, Thanjavur. As instructed by the sleuths, Singaravadivelan went to the school on Tuesday and handed over the bribe to Cheran. When Cheran took the money, the DVAC sleuths led by DSP Sridhar caught him red-handed and recovered the money.

The cop was later produced in the court and remanded to judicial custody.
