Special team to bust child trafficking racket

A special police team has gone to Kanyakumari to unearth a child trafficking racket, based on a complaint from a woman in the city, whose one-year old girl child was sold by her husband some days ago. According to police, Raman, a construction worker in Sowripalayam had gone to Kanyakumari along with his wife Meena, and the child some days ago.

They had gone shopping, when Raman told her that the child had gone missing in the crowd and lodged a complaint with police there, they said. Raman left his depressed wife at her parents’ house and returned to Coimbatore.

Based on information from her friends n Coimbatore that Raman was spending money lavishly, Meena returned and questioned him about the money, who admitted that he had sold the baby for Rs.63,000 to a broker there, police said.

On a complaint from Meena, Peelamedu police took Raman into custody and interrogation revealed that he had sold the baby through one Kumarasamy a broker in Coimbatore to another broker in Kanyakumari. The baby had changed three hands. A special police team has been formed and left for Kanyakumari, along with Raman and Kumarasamy, to bust the racket, they said.
