Valarmathi, a Journalism student in Periyar University, Salem, who was arrested and lodged in the Central Jail here, was released on bail on Thursday.

Valarmathi, 23, was arrested on July 12 near Salem while distributing pamphlets in support of the agitation against the hydrocarbon and methane projects in the State. A few days later she was detained under Goondas Act.

Hearing the petition filed by her father, the Madras High Court on September 5 quashed her detention that was ordered by the Salem City Police Commissioner.

With the quashing of the Goondas Act, Valarmathi was granted bail. A large number of people, including her relatives, friends and social activists gave her a rousing reception.
