Commemorating World Food Day today, Corporation Commissioner K Vijay Karthiyen released the No Food Waste Anthem sung by class eight student R Shruthi here.

Inaugurating Zero Hunger Hour organised by the Coimbatore chapter of the No Food Waste organisation, Vijay Karthikeyan launched a new vehicle to be used for the distribution and collection of foods. He also inaugurated the No Food Waste facility and training centre inside the sanitary inspector’s ward office in Ukkadam.

Speaking at the launch, he said that exemplary schemes like the No Food Waste had taken Coimbatore to global standards. “The corporation is always ready to support projects such as these by youngsters and the Government has also passed a order to help the organisation,” said Karthikeyan, adding that he felt blessed to work in Coimbatore, where youngsters are vibrant in volunteering.

Around 500 food packets were distributed to the hungry and needy, between 12.30 pm and 1.30 pm, which is the zero hunger hour.

Other programmes include a hunger photo walk contest and a ‘dhal bucket challenge’, where dhal was distributed to malnourished kids and families in Coimbatore.

A second food and beverage ATM was also inaugurated in the city as a part of the event.
