In an attempt to complete the target of constructing 2500 household toilets in the city before March 31, the Coimbatore Corporation authorities have decided to build them all in 72 hours using civil engineering students from Coimbatore-based colleges.
After the launch of the initiative to construct toilets for households, the civic body and Swachh Bharat ambassadors planned to rope in students for civil engineering from various city colleges to help in the construction process.
According to sources, authorities will select one student for the construction of each toilet. The student has to complete the task of engineering the construction within the stipulated 72 hours. While materials will be provided by the city corporation, corporate houses, and crowd funding, the actual engineering and construction will be left to the students.
The initiative, apart from benefiting the households, will also give hands-on training to the students. It was earlier believed that each toilet would cost around Rs.20,000, but the estimate has come down to Rs.12,000 now.
Meanwhile, the civic body as arranged for a meeting of all the Swachh Bharat ambassadors, NGOs, corporate houses, and principals of engineering colleges to decide on the date of launch of the 72-hour-long Constructathon.
