Tension prevailed for some time at INTUC Cement Workers Union office in Madukkarai on the outskirts, when a group of persons opposed of installing a bust of late union National general secretaty, N Nanjapan there.

The workers union has decided to celebrate his 67th birth anniversary today and also unveil a bronze bust at the office. However, a group of workers opposed the move and there was an argument between them, police said.

On information, senior police officials, along with a posse of police, rushed to the spot and considering the situation, permission was refused to unveil the bust, they said.

However, the birth anniversary was observed without any problem and former Union Minister and Rajya Sabha MP, SR Balasubramanian, former Tamil Nadu Minister, Pongalur Palanisay and several Congress leaders participated.

Palanisamy later said that the permission was not needed to install a statue inside the office premises and it was not acceptable to cancel it only because of opposition of handful of people, as Nanjappan was a great leader accepted by the locals and also at National level.
