Three get double life sentence for murder

The District Court in Tirupur today awarded double life sentence to three persons for murdering an 80-year-old man near Vellakoil at Tirupur a year ago.

The three – Subramanian, Shaktivel and Natarajan – during their bid to rob the Velayudhaswamy temple in Mettupalayam near Vellakoil, attacked the temple watchman Mahali with sharp weapons. Mahali died instantly. They decamped with gold and silver ornaments and cash from the hundis and also the jewellery on the presiding deity.

Based on a complaint form the temple authorities, police registered a case and arrested the trio.

The Principal District Judge, Alamelu Natarajan, sentenced the three to undergo double imprisonment for the murder and 10 years rigorous imprisonment for the robbery. The sentence will run concurrently. The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 40,000 on them, failing which they would have to undergo another four years in prison.
