Tight security for Dalit youth’s memorial march near Coimbatore

Coimbatore : Security was beefed up on Saturday at Karumathampati on the outskirts, in view of the annual procession being taken out by various organisations to observe the death anniversary of a Dalit youth, killed in a violence some 20 years ago

Murugesan was killed during a clash between two communities which broke out over the issue of him travelling in a bus with an upper caste on this day in 1999 near Karumathapatti.

To observe the anniversary of the incident, various Dalit organisations take out processions from different places to the memorial of Murugeshan.

With 13 organisations planning to take out processions and pay homage to Murugesan, over 500 police personnel, drawn from nearby districts, were deployed in and around the area to meet any eventualities. Majority of the shops in the area downed their shutters.
