Tree planting, rallies mark Environment Day celebrations

COIMBATORE: Processions, rally, tree planting marked the World Environment Day celebrations across the city on Tuesday. Addressing a function in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), its Dean Dr. S. Mahimaraja emphasised the significance of planting trees in global carbon management and taking care till it reaches a stage.

He also stressed the importance of trees in the sustained supply of oxygen to healthy atmosphere and for human health. The event was marked by tree planting and cycle rally and Mahimaraja inaugurated by planting a Peepal sapling in memory of Prof. Shiva Shankar (late), Founder of Environmental Protection Movement, Bengaluru, a release said.

Meanwhile, a group of students from private schools took out a procession from Railway Station against single use plastic, in order to create awareness among the general public.

There would be environmental hazard due to the use of plastic articles such as cup, plate, carry bags and straw, they told the public. Such plastics can be avoided, since it was mainly used in households, so that water bodies and soil can be protected from pollution, the students said.
