With only a week left for the Assembly polls, the total seizure of unaccounted money by the Election Commission in Tamil Nadu has crossed Rs. 80 crore.
According Chief Electoral officer Rajesh Lakhoni on Wednesday, the Commission has seized more than Rs 1.4 crore unaccounted money at various places across the State.
He said the total amount so far seized was Rs 81.85 crore since MCC was imposed in the State
According to the EC, of the total three lakh complaints related to the violation of MCC received, action was taken against 2.85 lakh. During the same period more than thousand FIRs have been registered against those who violated the MCC.
The Commission also seized gift articles, including jewellery worth several lakh so far even as the EC took action against three lakh poll violation cases across the State since the implementation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC). In addition, hundreds of cases of liquor bottles have also been seized.
According to EC, cameras have been installed at nearly 40,000 places in the State to check the violation of MCC.
All the money, which was seized by the EC, was deposited in the Treasury. The CEO also said about 1,500 flying squad personnel have been appointed at various check points across the State to check malpractices during election.
