Coimbatore : Police today took the maternal uncle of the two and half-year-old child, whose body was found in a well in Vilankurichi yesterday, into custody for interrogation.

The girl child, who was sleeping with her parents in the house, was found dead in an abandoned well, some 500 metres from the house.

Police suspected the hands of some of the relative in the incident and nabbed the step brother of child’s mother Kanchana.

Police had found a dhoti and an empty liquor bottle near the well.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that the relative had taken the child there to sexually abuse her, but shut her mouth with hand, when she started screaming.

As the child fell unconscious, Raghunath hurled her down in the well

Further investigations are on, police added.
