The vital organs of 51-year-old Sujatha Nayak, wife of Vishwanath Nayak, of Erode were harvested and transplanted to beneficiaries per the wishes of her close kin.

Sujatha was diagnosed with brain haemorrhage and given special care after being referred to KMCH, Coimbatore for specialised treatment on the same day.

After she failed to respond to treatment and all hopes of reviving her were lost, a team of surgeons got into action after obtaining the required statutory approvals from her husband. The team harvested the liver, heart, kidney, eyes and skin from the brain-dead patient.

Using the green corridor facility, the heart was flown out to a speciality hospital in Chennai, and the liver and kidneys were transplanted at KMCH. The skin and eyes were dispatched to different private hospitals in the city to be transplanted to beneficiaries.

“As many seven needy people benefited from the organs donation,” said Dr Nalla G Palaniswami, Chairman, KMCH.
