A Sri Lankan woman refugee today immolated herself in her house in Mettupalayam near here.

According to the police, she was upset over the inability to repay the loan taken by her drunkard husband and took this extreme step.

Shantakumar, a painter by profession, was staying in the refugee camp in Vedar Colony in Mettupalayam, some 40 km from here, with his wife and two children. He has taken money from his friends and neighbours and spent it on alcohol, and debtors soon started troubling and abusing his wife, Darshini, for the money, police say.

Unable to bear the humiliation, she doused kerosene on her body and set herself ablaze this morning. Hearing the screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and took her to the government hospital. However, without responding to the treatment, she died here. Police have registered a case and are investigating.
