More than 100 women engaged in a road roko at Periyapatti village near Udumalpet for one hour demanding a change in the location of the TASMAC shop at the village.

They claimed that drunks were creating a lot of problems to the public, including school children and women, while crossing the place.

Last week more than 10 accidents occurred in Periyapatti village road because of drunken driving. One of the women from the area said, “We are unable to walk on the road alone, we are scared of the activities of drunks. There is no protection if anything goes wrong, so all the women together gave a petition to the Tiruppur district collector to change the TASMAC shop from there, but still no action has been taken.”

Finally police officials came to the spot and assured the women that the TASMAC shop would be changed to another place within this month. After this the road blockade was cleared.

“This is not the end; if steps are not taken to shift the TASMAC shop, we will stage a bigger demonstration,” added the villagers.
