Worker buried alive inside 10 ft pit, dies

Pattukottai: In a tragic incident, a 45-year-old worker engaged in extricating an impaired motor engine out from a bore-well was buried alive inside a 10 -foot-deep pit near Pattukottai on Friday as mud slid unexpectedly.

Three workers namely Sundarraj (48), Murugan (52) and Nadimuthu (45) were engaged to extricate an impaired motor out from a bore-well sunk in the coconut grove owned by Argoyasamy at Anaikkadu area. The workers had dug up a 10- foot- deep pit parallel to the bore-well in a bid to extricate the impaired motor engine out.

With continuous rain lashing out in Pattukottai area for the last two days, ground was damp. By standing in the parallel pit, Nadimuthu , father of nine children, was attempting to extract the motor engine out when the mud unexpectedly slid. Subsequently, he was buried alive.

On being informed, the fire and rescue service personnel and local villagers with the help of excavator retrieved his body and sent it to government hospital.

Revenue Divisional Officer R Govindaraj of Pattukottai Sub Division, Assistant Superintendent of Police Aravind Menon and Tahsildar S Ravichandran rushed there and geared up the rescue operation.

Nadimuthu is survived by his wife Saroja and nine children including three daughters.
