The special court of bomb blast cases in the city on Thursday sentenced a 27-year-old youth to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for murdering his roommate.

The accused, Santhosh, son of Rajendran of Yellanalli in the Nilgiris, was studying in a private college at Kalappatti and staying with his friend Dinesh of Trichengode in Namakkal district in a room near the college.

The two had come to an agreement that one of them would clean the room on alternate days.

According to the case, on July 25, 2015, it was Dinesh’s turn to clean the room. When he failed to do that, a quarrel broke out which turned violent and Santhosh stabbed Dinesh with a knife. He died the same day without responding to treatment at hospital, according to public prosecutor S Gopalakrishnan.

Peelamedu police registered the case and arrested Santhosh.

On Thursday, judge M Gunasekaran sentenced Santhosh to 10 years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000. In case he failed to pay the fine, he would have to undergo another three months of imprisonment.

Santhosh is at Coimbatore Central Jail.
