Peelamedu is on the educational map of the world, and this 300+ years old suburb has an interesting history.

Circa 1311, the marauding armies of Alauddin Khilji under his General, Malik Kafur, exterminated the four south Indian kingdoms, including the Yadavas of Devagiri, Kakatiyas of Warangal, Hoysalas of Dwarasamudra, and the Pandiyas of Madurai. The bloody rampage unleashed anarchy, and Saint Vidyaranya of Sringeri guided Harihara and Bukka to establish a kingdom in order to restore peace in south India.

Kumara Kampanna, the son of Bukka and his wife Gangadevi, raised a huge army by the year 1368, and over the next few years, created order and established a vast empire south of the River Krishna. It was during those times and later, that a number of Kannada and Telugu speaking soldiers, farmers, and traders settled down all over Tamilnadu, giving the state a cosmopolitan feel.

A set of black-cotton farmers settled down in Krishnarayapuram, near the Sanganoor Pallam, over five hundred years ago. These industrious farmers suffered huge losses during the floods of 1711, and they requested the local ruler Kurikkara Madhaiyan to let them establish a new village on a higher ground.

The noble ruler was the feudatory of the Raja of Mysore, for by then, this area had come under their grasp. It was after much persuasion that the King of Mysore granted a permission to Ganga Naidu and his people to establish the Peelamedu village on the 11th of November, 1711, the day the Mondipalayam Venkatesa Perumal Temple was consecrated.

The farmers established their village, built the Karivaradaraja Temple and began working hard in their new place.

Industrialisation visited Coimbatore and the black-cotton farmers of Peelamedu, including the PSG Family, Rao Bahadur Gopal Naidu family, and the Birla of South India, R. Venkataswamy Naidu, created several business and charitable institutions and put Peelamedu, and Coimbatore as well, on the educational and entrepreneurial map of the world.
