Why differentiate when it comes to punishment for adultery?

As per the existing law under IPC 497, only the male partner is punishable for adultery while the female goes unpunished. A petition was filed with the Supreme Court challenging this law. An amendment to the law wherein the woman also should be punished is demanded through this petition. And, when asked about this , the public were unanimous in their opinion that both men and women are equally liable in adultery.
