Chennai: It was protests and TTV Dhinakaran supporters trying to burn Kamal Haasan in effigy after he said the former’s win in the RK Nagar byelection was because `people sold their votes’.
A police team was posted in front of the actor’s Alwarpet residence after a Tamil outfit said it would lay siege to his house in protest against his remarks on RK Nagar voters.
In Poonamallee, a group of Dhinakaran supporters raised slogans against Kamal and tried to burn him in his effigy. However, police thwarted the attempt and detained the protestors.
Separately, a case has been filed against Kamal in the Coimbatore Judicial Magistrate Court by one Elango. He alleged that the actor had brought disrepute to those living in RK Nagar by making wild accusations in his article in a Tamil magazine yesterday.
In his weekly column in `Ananda Vikatan’, Kamal expressed dismay at the way the election was fought by Dhinakaran and the ruling AIADMK. He accused AIADMK of distributing Rs 6,000 to each voter, when Dhinakaran, an Independent, had set it at Rs 20,000 per vote. “People sold themselves for money. Those who offered the highest to voters walked away victoriously,” the article said.
“It was like seeking alms from a thief who runs away with your money,” he added.
