Chennai : An angry mob lynched a suspected car thief in Chidambaram village of Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district on Monday.

Police have detained some ten persons in this connection for questioning. Villagers told media persons on Tuesday that the suspected car thief was seen roaming on the Kasukadai street and had allegedly tried to open the door of a vehicle that was parked on the street. He was spotted by the owners and some passers-by who nabbed him.

A crowd collected in no time and began questioning him. But no answers were forthcoming as the man could only speak in Hindi.

Before the police could arrive, the mob had thrashed him lifeless. The body of the man has been sent to government hospital for post mortem.

The police have registered a case of attempt to murder against several persons.

This is the third instance of lynching in Tamil Nadu in the recent past. In September a boy was lynched on suspicion of theft in Karur district and a few weeks earlier, a 63-year-old woman was lynched in Tiruvannamalai on suspicion of being a child lifter.
