Traffic conditions in Coimbatore are expected to improve further as people here law-abiding, according to Sujith Kumar who has just assumed charge as Deputy Commissioner for Traffic in the city.

It has almost been a week since Sujit Kumar took charge and he feels Coimbatoreans follow traffic rules better than those in some of the other districts like Salem Rural and Madurai where he worked before “I got to spent only three days in the city. Still I see at least 80 per cent of two-wheeler riders wearing helmets. That’s a good sign,” he told The Covai Post.

Despite this, the high numbers of road accidents in city is a matter of concern and finding a solution to that will be his priority. Steps would be taken to ensure people follow traffic signal and traffic rules like halting at the white lines, he added.

Sujit Kumar also said that steps would be taken to prevent water logging in underpasses during the November-December rains.

Sujit Kumar had his training in Madurai and was posted as ASP Salem Rural before getting promoted as DC Traffic here. From Bihar, he is a first generation graduate in his family. He worked as a history professor at Delhi University for six years before getting his IPS selection.
