IT raids continue, bank lockers opened; likely to be on till Monday

Chennai: The Income Tax raids at houses and business establishments connected with VK Sasikala and TTV Dhinakaran, the leaders kept out of the ruling AIADMK, continued for the second day on Friday and may go on till Monday.
Sources said that inspection had been completed at 40 places and was continuing in 147. More than 355 people were under the watch of the IT sleuths.
The authorities have checked 217 bank accounts of Sasikala’s friends and relatives. Sources revealed that 1,800 officials have been engaged for the raids at various locations.
The IT department began openingbank lockers mostly in branches of Axis Bank and Tamilnadu Mercantile Bank at Saidapet and Kottivakkam, the sources added.
BJP state president Tamilisai Soundarajan discounted charges that the raids were politically motivated. Raids are conducted only when officials have some suspicion. People should appreciate the move and not attribute political motivations behind them, she added.
Minister D Jayakumar said the IT department conducts raids were on the basis of information it had received and the State Government had no role in this.
