The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) – Coimbatore Council has urged the District Collector to initiate steps to spread awareness on the ill effects of using plastic products.

In a petition to the Collector, AIKS President S.Palanisamy said a lot of plastic was being dumped in the open areas, water bodies and sewage canals in Coimbatore resulting in illness. “The usage of plastic has drastically come down in neighbouring Karnataka and Kerala. Many people even burn plastic here. The administration should intervene and spread awareness on the ill effects of plastic,” he said in the petition.

“People can use jute or cloth bags instead of plastic ones. Hotels should also start serving food in either banana leaves or steel plates. Or they can use plates made out of ‘pakku mattai’,”
he said and urged bakeries and tea shops to serve tea in glass or steel tumblers.

“By encouraging the use of banana leaves and pakku mattai plates, we can also promote agriculture and help the farmers in the farmers in the district. We can also save the agricultural lands and water bodies from the pollution caused due to dumping of plastic waste,” Palanisamy added.
