Chennai: The Madurai bench of Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu Government to submit a report on the damage caused by cyclone Ockhi and rescue and relief measures taken in Kanyakumari district where the fishermen were worst hit by the tropical cyclone.

It set a deadline of December 8 by when the report would have to be submitted.

On a public interest litigation filed by one Darwin of coastal hamlet Vallavilai, the court sought a detailed report on the steps taken to rescue stranded fishermen.

The litigant had sought to know from the Government what steps it had taken to provide basic amenities in cyclone-hit Kanyakumari.

Separately, DMK working president MK Stalin wrote a letter to Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stating that the State Government had failed in rescuing missing fisherman who had gone to sea before Ockhi. He added that his observations were on the basis of the people in Kanyakumari who he had met.
