Divorce has been most among couples within two years of marriage, according to Rotarian SP Manoharan during the workshop ‘Uravukku Uyir Koduppom’ (a pre-marital guidance programme) for college students here on Monday.

This is the third edition of workshop, organised by the PSGR Krishnammal College for Women in association with Rotary Club of Coimbatore East. Manoharan said 90 per cent of the divorce cases were due to minor ego problems and lack of proper understanding between couples.

Children and parents should be more affectionate as divorce was higher among couples who as children received less affection from parents.

Over the last nine years, the club had held programmes for better awareness among more than 20,000 college students, he added.

Pediatrician DrK Selvaraj said couples should with the help of psychologists undertake personality matching before marriage. Factors to be considered are physical and functional personality aspects. Through this, couples can solve problems themselves or with the help of experts.

He said most of the girls turned vegetarians in the name of diet as a result of which there is folic acid (a form of water-soluble B vitamins) deficiency. This can lead to their children being having brain and nervous issues. Women need to start consuming vitamin B supplements from the first day of marriage at least, he added.

Former Director for Government Examinations K Devaraj said students should not hesitate to ask for help in case they have problems. Most of the suicide cases among students were a result of their hesitation in seeking timely help. Students should value time and health and develop an analytical mind and respond to problems instead of immediate reaction.
