Growers seek Rs 50,000 relief for each coconut palm in Coimbatore airport acquisition land

Coimbatore : Tamil Nadu Farmers Association today sought Rs 50,000 as compensation for each coconut tree, located in the area to be acquired for City Airport expansion.

In a memorandum submitted to District Collector,T N Hariharan, the association said the Government was yet to fix the compensation for buildings in the area to be taken over for the airport.

Stating that the each tree, aged from 20 to 25 years, is giving a yield of 200 nuts per year, farmers said that once the neera project started picking up there was all the possibility of prices going up for the tree and coconuts.

In view of this the Government should fix Rs 50,000 as compensation per tree, approximately 2,500 to 3,000 trees in the area, for the benefit of those was gave consent to give away their lands,they said.

Hariharan was likely to meet and discuss the issue with the farmers in a couple of days.
