Chennai : Once again Tamil film Singer Kovan was arrested, this time for singing songs criticising the prime minister and the BJP from his Oraiyur residence in Tiruchirapalli district.

He was singing songs during a Cauvery protest programme in Tiruchirapalli on March 24 during which he criticised the VHP and its rath yatra too.

A complaint was lodged against him by a BJP youth wing office bearer, following which the police went to his house and arrested him.

The allegations against him are of disturbing peace and acts that may promote others to act against the state and harm public peace.

The complaint against him alleged that the manner in which Kovan sang his songs brought disrepute to the prime minister’s name the post. Activists involved in theatre and drama and music were protesting for the welfare of the Cauvery delta farmers and against the central government’s failure to form the Cauvery Management Board as per the Supreme Court’ s February 16 order.

Two years ago, Kovan was arrested and sedition charges slapped against him on October 2015 for criticising then chief minister J Jayalalithaa on the liquor policy.

He was later granted bail and had his sedition charges quashed by the Madras High Court.
