COIMBATORE: Eight persons got new lease of lives after the vital organs of a brain dead teenager were transplanted on them in a city private hospital.

R.P. Shaktivel (16), a Plus Two student, met with an accident while riding his bike on April 19 near Vanavasi in Salem district.

After first aid in a private hospital in Salem, he was shifted to Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH). However, he did not respond to the treatment and was declared brained dead on April 21.

As the parents stood clueless, Shaktivel’s uncle came forward and expressed willingness to donate organs.

Accordingly, a team of doctors harvested Shaktivel’s lungs, liver, kidneys and eyes on Sunday at the hospital.

While liver and kidneys were transplanted to patients at KMCH, heart and lungs were sent to a Chennai hospital and eyes to a hospital in Coimbatore.
