Bandh near total in Coimbatore, Tirupur; most shops closed, inter-state buses stay off roads

Coimbatore : Over 75 per cent of traders and shops downed shutters in response to the bandh call given by DMK-led Opposition political parties over the Sterlite issue and buses to neighbouring Kerala and Karnataka did not ply.
According to police, 70 to 75 per cent of the shops were closed across the district, though essential services like medical shops, milk booths remained open. With buses to Kerala and Karnataka from Ukkadam not operating, it was hardship for passengers.

In nearby Tirupur also, majority of shops and factories were closed, police said. No untoward incidents were reported.
Over 500 DMK workers were arrested for attempting to stage demonstrations at various place to protest against the arrest of party working president M K Stalin.
Meanwhile, over 2,000 lawyers boycotted courts for the third day today and staged a demonstration, protesting against the police firing.They also demanded stringent action against the erring policemen who indulged in the firing.
