Value-education gets back seat; no move yet to post specialist teachers in schools

COIMBATORE: Value-education and arts- related classes like drawing, physical education etc need to get prominence in schools to create responsible citizens, say experts.
These classes aim to relieve stress as a result of the burden heavy subjects can create. There are about 193 government and government assistance higher secondary schools in Coimbatore district. Of these, very few have not more than 250 students from Grade Vi to X where specialist teachers can be allotted work. In other schools, there are few permanent teachers for arts and value education.
Teachers welfare leader S A Raj Kumar , Leader of Art Teacher’s Welfare Association told The Covai Post about the problems of these pending posts in government schools, “The recent publication says the school should have at least 250 students from Grade VI to X to allot specialist teachers. Teachers who work in schools with lesser strength will be relocated to work in other schools. I feel the place for arts and value education-related subjects will go out from the list of regular papers soon.”

Earlier, government schools had have farming and agriculture as part of co-curricular subjects but were removed as student numbers fell with the rush to corporate or private schools, he added.
“This has been taken to the notice of the Education Minister, the State Curriculum Office and the School Education Department,” said Raj Kumar.
There is discontent among teaching fraternity over shifting of specialist teachers. The Government was yet to take steps to resolve the issue and appoint such teachers, he added.
