Doctors, nurses in Mettupalayam Govt Hospital on flash strike

Coimbatore : The doctors and nurses in the Government hospital in Mettupalayam in the district, are on flash strike, seeking immediate action against those who had assaulted a duty doctor and a female nurse last night, following the death of woman patient there.

According to police, the woman, an accident victim, was admitted to the hospital, some 40 KMs from here and died last night.

Some relatives accused the doctors and nurses of giving wrong treatment leading to the death and started assaulting duty doctor Lakshmani Kumar and nurse Mahalakshmi, they said.

A staff, Kumarasami, who attempted to prevent them from beating was also attacked, police said.

Protesting against the assault and also seeking immediate and stringent action against those involved in the assault, the doctors, nurses and staff, numbering about 60, are observing strike, police said.

The senior office-bearers of Doctors association from Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital have rushed to the spot to express solidarity with the striking colleagues.

The video of relatives assaulting the doctor and nurse has gone viral in the social media.
