Lawyer takes right to left route to pen Thirukkural

Saint Thiruvalluvar authored the Tamil classic ‘Thirukkural’, which has been translated into many languages. Likewise, his work has been receiving accolades in different forms from people across the globe. Thinking out-of-the-box is lawyer M. Raja Sherieff’s habit. He did the same with Thirukkural too – he strained his nerves to write ‘Thirukkural’ from right to left, similar to Hebrew and Arabic script form.
What inspired lawyer Raja Sherieff to think in an unusual way to write ‘Thirukkural’ from right to left. Nothing, but to do something unique and receive the attention of the public. Earlier, some of his novel works on ‘Thirukkural’ received appreciation from the former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
Sharing his experience on his innovative concept at his Kottaimedu residence, Raja Sherieff said, “It took me nearly 12 hours to write the 133 chapters (Adikarams) containing 1,330 couplets of Thirukkural. After completion, I got the handwritten copy printed in book form with 133 pages.”
To facilitate readers to browse through the book, he said that he had attached a mirror along with the Thirukkural book. Many Tamil literary stalwarts appreciated his novel effort to promote Thirukkural among the public. Raja Sherieff is working on getting the book into all public libraries across Tamil Nadu.
About his future plans, Raja Sherieff said that his ambition was to bring out Thirukkural in different forms. “It would be ideal to gift this Thirukkural book way to newlyweds and at birthday functions of near and dear. In my opinion, it’s worth presenting this book as it would have some impact,” he noted.
Raja Sherieff further said that he had developed a skill to write not only from right to left but also upside down and writing using left hand without any hassles. He has also planned to teach students this innovative concept as it would serve twin purpose of making it a passion and later a profession.
Some of his earlier works include writing on palm leaves using nail, and setting up a mega size Thirukkural book with at 7 feet height and 4 feet width weighing 150 kilogram.
