A four-day-long medical expo, exclusively for women, was inaugurated today at Coimbatore-based Gem Hospital and Research Centre. The expo, themed “Women’s health is the nation’s health,” was inaugurated by the former High Court Judge, KBK Vasuki.

City Police Commissioner A. Amalraj released a book, ‘Penne Nalama?’ written by the doctors of the hospital.

Chairman of Gem Hospital, Dr. C. Palanivelu said that one-tenth of world’s deaths were due to cancer and women were affected more than men, as 35 to 40 percent of them were due to the cancers of the uterus and the ovaries. About 20 to 40 percent women in reproductive age group develop fibroids, he said.

The expo has informative charts about various diseases of women, and 3-D video on major surgery procedure.

The hospital’s newly constructed International Centre of Excellence for laparoscopic cancer surgery, cancer and hernia, was also inaugurated at the launch of the expo.
