Cops keep vigil on cell towers

Agitators, particularly youth, are targeting cell towers to lodge their protest or issue suicide threats seeking total prohibition in Tamil Nadu.  Hence, the Police Department has started keeping a strict vigil on such towers across the district.

On Sunday night three Congress party workers had climbed atop three cell towers in the city, seeking prohibition. Police had a tough time convincing them to come down.

Considering that cell towers are now becoming ‘synonymous’ with Gandhian Sasi Perumal, who died on such a tower a couple of days ago in Kanyakumari district, police are monitoring the movement of youths and party workers,  particularly in rural  limits like Sulur, Adukkarai, Karumathampatti and Mettupalayam, police said.

Moreover, the Department also started taking census of towers across the district and wanted the operators to ensure that they had security personnel placed at the towers to guard against recurrence of such incidents, they said.
