Crucial Cauvery meet tomorrow

Chennai: Following the instructions of the Supreme Court to set up a technical team to visit the Cauvery basin, Tamil Nadu PWD Secretary SK Prabhakar and Cauvery Technical Cell Chairman R Subramanian will reportedly leave for Bengaluru today to represent the state in the meeting that will be held tomorrow.

There will be a preparatory meeting in Bengaluru at 9.30 am tomorrow headed by Central Water Commission (CWC) Chairman GS Jha. CWC member (water planning and projects) S Masood Husain, CWC chief engineer (Krishna and Godavari basin organisations) RK Gupta and Chief Secretaries or their representatives of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry will be a part of the panel, sources said.

Sources said that after the meeting, the panel will visit the Cauvery river basin. Reports will be submitted to the Supreme Court on October 17. The panel is expected to visit Hemavathi, Harangi, Krishnarajasagar and Kabini reservoirs in Karnataka and Mettur, Lower Bhavani Dam and Amaravathi reservoirs in Tamil Nadu between October 7 and 15.

On October 4, AIADMK MPs marched to the PMO with a memorandum, while the urging the constitution of the Cauvery Water Management Board (CWMB) to ensure proper water sharing between states.

Chief Secretary P Rama Mohana Rao told Secretary of Water Resources Ministry Shashi Shekhar, in a letter on Monday that the court had on September 30 recorded Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi’s submission that CWMB can be constituted on or before October 4.
