Sixteen Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhakam (TPDK) activists were arrested today when they attempted to wave black flags at Union Petroleum Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, as he arrived at the city airport, to protest the Centre’s decision to make Pongal an optional holiday.

Led by TPDK Organising Secretary, Aruchami, the activists raised slogans against the Centre for the announcement, which they said was against the Tamils and their traditions, police said.

Even as they attempted to wave black flags about 1 km from the airport, on the arrival of Pradhan here to attend a function, police arrested them, they said.

Meanwhile, some 30 students of the Government Arts College picketed in front of the college, blocking vehicular traffic for some 20 minutes, to protest the decision.

Condemning the announcement, the students raised slogans and squatted on the road, blocking traffic. All of them were taken into custody.
