Elephants damage house near Perur

Two wild elephants that ventured out of the reserve forest damaged a house in Arumuga Goundanur in Perur during the early hours of Wednesday.
According to locals, the two elephants, a mother and calf, strayed into human habitation around 9 pm on Tuesday and roamed in areas including Pachapalayam, Perur, Goundanur Kuttai and Arumuga Goundanur.
The elephants reportedly broke the door of a house belonging to Pandi Selvi at MR Nagar in Arumuga Goundanur, and ate vegetables and rice stored in the kitchen.
The elephants also ate flour in a mixture factory nearby.
Woken up by the alarm raised by the inmates, neighbours chased the elephants back into the reserve forest by making noise.
The locals complained that elephants are frequently venturing into their area putting their lives and the lives of their children at risk.
“The Government should compensate for the property that was damaged,” said a resident.
