With neighbouring Kerala reportedly beginning construction of a check dam across Bhavani river at Manjakandi, various political parties and organisations today decided to organise a protest at K G Chavadi, bordering Tamil Nadu and Kerala, on March 12.

The decision to this effect was taken at an all-party meeting held at the DMK office here.

Kerala has almost completed the construction of a check dam in Thekkuttai, preventing the flow of Bhavani water for irrigation and drinking purpose to Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode districts, Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhakam (TPDK) sources said.

As the Kerala government is also preparing to build a check dam at Manjakandi, representatives of DMK, TPDK, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal, Farmers’ Associations, Peasants and Workers Party, and Kongunadu Jananayaka Katchi discussed and arrived at the decision to stage a 12-hour demonstration at K G Chavadi, they said.

The meeting also demanded that both the Centre and Tamil Nadu governments should take immediate steps to prevent the move by Kerala.
