Residents of Kannampalayam in Sulur taluk have urged the District Collector to initiate steps to open a primary health centre in their area.

In a petition to T.N. Hariharan, the residents said they have been requesting the authorities to open a PHC for the last 22 years.

The residents have been pleading the authorities – Collector, State Health Ministers, Chief Minister’s Cell, Legislative Assembly Grievance Cell – since 1995. They even deposited Rs. 10,000 in the State treasury for this purpose. They sent 1007 post cards to the CM’s Cell.

Their pleas have not been answered yet, in spite of the Assembly Petition Committee’s promise to open a PHC.

According to former President of Kannampalayam Panchayat P. Mounasami, there are only private hospitals in their area which the residents cannot afford. “Most of them are daily wage labourers. They cannot afford to go to private hospitals. The nearest Government Hospital is in Sulur, which lacks many facilities,” he said.

“Thirty PHCs are to be opened today. We are hoping that one will be opened in our area,” Mounasami added.
