As much as Rs. 80 lakh of unpaid tax money were paid in two days by the electrical and sanitary material dealers in the K.K. Lane, near Avinashi Road. Thanks to the inspection by the officials of the Enforcement Wing of Commercial Tax Department here for the last two weeks.

According to Mariam Farzhana, the Joint Commissioner of the Enforcement Wing of the Commercial Taxes Department, Coimbatore, the officials have been inspecting the finance records of the shops in the area from the September 12. However, a tussle occurred between the dealers and the officials, since the dealers felt that the officials had done an unannounced raid.

“We had talks with the dealers and made them understand the situation. After that the inspection went peaceful,” she said.

“Eight teams were formed with three members each, and 24 officials were involved in the inspection campaign on Monday,” added Ms. Farzhana.

The Joint Commissioner informed that the officials had found that some of the dealers had not paid their taxes and were advised by them to pay the taxes before the Department fixed a fine amount.

“The dealers accepted our request and have started paying the left out tax amount from Saturday. Around 35 dealers voluntarily paid a total of Rs. 50 lakh on Saturday and around 15 have paid up to Rs. 30 lakh on Monday. We are expecting more payments in the coming days,” she told reporters here.

Apologizing for the confusion, H.S. Anand, one of the dealers of the area said that the dealers would help the Department in every way possible and promised to pay the maximum amount of tax that is left out.

“All the dealers should use the opportunity and pay the left out tax amount to help the Department and the Government,” he added.
