Bengaluru: Karnataka’s Water Resources Minister MB Patil on Thursday said that it won’t be possible to implement the SC’s order to release 4 tmc of Cauvery water as the state is facing severe shortage of water.

After hearing a petition from Tamil Nadu against the Centre’s delay in following a SC order to set up the Cauvery Management Board (CMB), the apex court on Thursday ordered the Karnataka government to immediately release 4 tmc of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

Patil said that the state is facing severe shortage of drinking water. On the other hand, only 9 tmc water is available in four reservoirs of Cauvery basin, making it highly impossible to release water to Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu government had approached the apex court alleging undue delay on the part of the Union Government in setting up the CMB.

In February, the SC ordered the Centre to set up the body, and had given it six weeks to do so. The deadline lapsed at the end of March. The SC ordered the Centre to file an affidavit on May 8, four days before Karnataka Assembly elections. Patil said that the legal experts will be asked file a petition against the order of the apex court.
