And just the way we emphasise about toddlers sleep, we ought to do it for us, grown ups. The benefits of sleeping are many; from a radiant skin to boosting your memory. Making memories involve three stages– acquisition, consolidation and recall. Consolidation is boosted only while asleep. No wonder,we are forgetful and groggy without proper sleep. And ofcourse, to preserve your young self, it is important to sleep well.

“Sleep deprivation can lead to increased risk of heart diseases,” says Dr Mukut Bhowmik,a Medical Practitioner. But not all of us are lucky to have those 8-9 hours to ourselves. We are running constantly to make ends meet. Some of us succumb to the pressures of life and work to hit the sack on time. But for them, a quick nap can do wonders. Fitting those 20 minutes into your day will energise you for the rest of the day.

The Art of Napping

We’ve heard this before…~~ When life knocks you down, you have two choices; you stay down or get up. What if you had to believe in the irony of all things? “When Life knocks you down just stay there and take a nap”.

“We all crave for a good solid nap, but our extremely stressful and busy life doesn’t give us this levy. A good nap increases mental well-being keeps us rejuvenated all day. Hence, corporates and multinational companies are offering nap rooms to their employees. I feel a short nap of 10-30 minutes can boost productivity and give you a fresh start. 8 hours of sleep is imperative. In a nutshell, the perfect nap would be – A short nap, in the afternoon, in a restful environment and don’t forget to set that alarm. Things to keep in mind- Explore you napping style, take care of the position you are sleeping in and the place,” says Kabir Siddiq, Founder & CEO, SleepyCat.

Let’s get this straight, napping isn’t just for kindergarten, it is for all of you who can’t manage a full eight hours at night. For inspiration, here are few famous nappers that you can look upto; Leonardo da Vinci, Margaret Thatcher, Winston Churchill.

The Science behind Napping “You should be inspired by the Garfield in you. Studies show that napping helps you refresh the mind,
boost your creativity and help you lead a healthier and longer life. Relax and drink a cup of coffee. It might seem counterintuitive, but consuming caffeine right before you take a nap has a hidden benefit.

Caffeine from coffee takes about 20-25 minutes to kick in for most people. You should wake feeling refreshed from your nap, and more alert from the caffeine so you are not as groggy. Therefore explore your ways to the right catnap and incorporate in your daily life,” elaborates Kabir.

The best positions to sleep

“People sleep in the position that they feel comfortable in and every sleep position has its own benefits. I feel the best position to sleep is to sleep straight. You could nap sitting up too but your mind should ease out,” Kabir concludes.
