A 23-year-old pregnant woman was admitted to the emergency care unit at KMCH with severe abdominal pain and continuous vomiting after previously seeking care at other hospitals without relief. Emergency evaluation revealed she was suffering from acute small bowel volvulus caused by an underlying congenital malrotation of the gut.

This condition is extremely rare during pregnancy and represents a severe emergency that, if not treated immediately, poses a significant threat to the lives of both the mother and the unborn child. Following this, a multidisciplinary medical team—comprising specialists from Obstetrics, General & Gastrointestinal Surgery, Anesthesiology, Neonatology, and Intensive Care Units—collaborated to successfully perform an emergency surgery.

During the procedure, the intestinal twist was corrected, and blood flow to the intestines was fully restored. As a result, the removal of a large portion of the small intestine was avoided, and the organ was completely saved. Subsequently, keeping the safety of both mother and child in mind, a successful Caesarean Section (C-Section) was performed. Post-surgery, both the mother and the newborn recovered exceptionally well and have now been safely discharged home in good health.
