BJP national president Amit Shah will arrive in Chennai on Wednesday on a private spiritual visit but is expected to thrash out the alliances for the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.

BJP national President Amit Shah arrives in Chennai on Wednesday amid searing poll heat as his party nearly isolated, with even its former allies playing hard to get.

The BJP, though it won a seat in Lok Sabha general elections and its then ally PMK secured another one, the party still remains a fringe player in Tamil Nadu politics and was hoping to strike it rich in this general elections with the help of its allies.

For sure, the BJP knows it has a long way to go. Its first goal is to spread across the state and improve its vote share and make a play for a serious role in the next general elections as the two Dravidian parties get further weakened.

It is for this reason that the BJP has for long positioning itself as an alternative to the two Dravidian parties that it wants to dislodge from state politics. Which is why, the BJP was trying to build a strong NDA alliance here in Tamil Nadu, building upon its alliance of 2014 general elections. But the PMK and Captain Vijayakant’s DMDK have spurned the BJP so far and have threatened to go their own respective ways.

But, negotiations are still on with both these former allies, BJP leaders have indicated. But at no point will the BJP compromise, even though it may agree for the time being to be the junior partner in the alliance and give a major role to the regional parties like PMK and DMDK, if only they would agree to hop on board.

BJP president would be participating in a religious function on Wednesday, but is expected to meet up with this senior party leaders of the State and take a final call on the alliances for the assembly elections. There are indications that he might talk with Dr S Ramadoss of PMK and Captain Vijayakant in a bid to finalise tie up.

BJP TN unit president, Tamilisai Soundararajan, said the BJP will never make a compromise for the sake of alliance. “Our party is confidence of facing the polls alone and win several seats by big margin”, she said after chairing the Central Committee meeting of the party in Chennai on Tuesday.

Stating that BJP is negotiating for formidable alliance mainly to prevent splitting of votes, she said the party however will not make any compromise for the alliance.

Queried whether BJP was still holding any informal talks with the DMDK, she said “we have taken all efforts to revive the NDA in the State for the Assembly elections. Whatever we want to discuss, has already been done”.

The BJP leader said it was up to the DMDK to come back to NDA fold to put an end to two Dravidian parties — the ruling AIADMK and DMK.
