With the Central government periodically increasing the prices of petrol and diesel, auto rickshaw drivers belonging with the Social Democratic Trade Union (SDTU) requested the District Collectorate to declare an increase auto fare.
In the petition to District Collector T N Hariharan, A Sultan, District Head of the SDTU, said that constant hikes are resulting in loss to the drivers. “We are following the current fare of Rs 25 as minimum and an additional Rs 12 for each km as framed by the government. However, since the prices of petrol and diesel are hiked every now and then, it becomes difficult to cope with this fare,” he said.
He further added that the fare should be revised to Rs 35 as the minimum charge with an addition of Rs 18 for each extra kilometre.
